There are several possibilities for obtaining Portuguese nationality, with two main modalities: attribution and acquisition. Basically, these modalities differ for the reasons of the request and for their effects.
The nationality by attribution is related to the origin, and therefore, upon its approval and registration, the effects are produced from the birth of the interested party (children, grandchildren, etc.).
Nationality by acquisition is directly related to the willingness of the interested party to acquire nationality, and after its granting, it only takes effect upon registration (by marriage, time of residence, descendants of Portuguese Sephardic Jews, etc.).
